2007 looks like another busy year for Troop 239. In January,
the scouts elected a new senior patrol leader, Jonathon
Roehl, and new patrol leaders: Jared Shipley was
selected to lead the Shark patrol, Andrew Shipley was
selected to lead the Raven patrol.
Court of Honor was held on February 5th, where a
number of scouts and adult leaders were recognized. Cade and
Connor Herring, Andrew Shipley, and Alex Driscoll were
awarded the Tenderfoot rank, and One Year Service Stars were
awarded to Scouts Jonathon Roehl, Jared Shipley, George
Murphey, and Adam McGinty and adult leaders Janice and
Dubois Murphy, Dawn and John Shipley, Jennifer and Jay
Bedell and Rick Pumphrey. The troop received their Klondike
award for Third Place in the Modified Wheeled Sled Race. The
boys also exchanged small gifts, which had been postponed
from earlier in the year.
Upcoming activities include:
Friends of Scouting:
A Friends of Scouting presentation will be made by a
District Council representative at the February 26th
troop meeting. We ask parents to attend the presentation,
which will be made during the first ten minutes of the troop
meeting. Be sure to bring your checkbooks!
Scouting for Food:
For more than 20 years, Scouts of all ages in our
Council have collected food to help feed the 65,000
families in our area who depend on the generosity of
their neighbors to help them feed their children during
tough times. We will have an opportunity to help again
in 2007 through our Scouting for Food program. Bags
provided by Safeway will be distributed to homes from
February 24-March 3rd. Neighbors fill the bags with
nonperishable food, and place the filled bags out for
Scouts to pick up on March 3, 2007. |

University of Scouting:
The University is an intensive training program to help
develop Scouter excellence in the Baltimore Area
Council. All registered Scouters are encouraged to
attend so that they may better understand the critical
role and function of their position in the Scouting
program. John and Dawn Shipley have both taken, and
taught classes at the University of Scouting, and they
say there are some wonderful things to be learned
there. It is taught by other volunteer Scout leaders in
the Baltimore Area. Classes on everything from
Fundraising and Finances, to planning successful events,
to trailside cooking are presented.
